  • What is Dermaplaning?
Dermaplaning is a form of manual exfoliation similar in theory to microdermabrasion but without the use of suction or abrasive crystals. An esthetician grade, sterile blade is stroked along the skin at an angle to gently “shave off” dead skin cells from the epidermis. Dermaplaning also temporarily removes the fine vellus hair of the face, leaving a very smooth surface. As with any type of exfoliation, the removal of dead skin cells allows home care products to be more effective, reduces the appearance of fine lines, evens skin tone and assists in reducing milia, closed and open comedones, and minor breakouts associated with congested pores. Dermaplaning can be effective exfoliation method for clients that have couperose (tiny blood vessels near the surface of the skin), sensitive skin or allergies that prevent the use of microdermabrasion or chemical peels. Due to the contours of the face, certain areas of the face (such as the eyelids and nose) are not treatable using this method.
  • What should you expect during your treatment?
As your esthetician, I will perform a thorough skin analysis prior to your first dermaplaning. If dermaplaning is not appropriate, you will be informed during this session and an alternative treatment may be recommended instead. If dermaplaning is not contraindicated, maximum results are obtained by participating in a series of treatments plus following a home care regimen. I will review your current daily regimen and skin care products, advise you on which products you should continue to use and recommend any additional products or changes to your regimen to enhance your desired outcome. Additional info: As your esthetician, I take every precaution to ensure that your skin is well hydrated and calm following each session. However, you may experience excessive dryness or even some peeling between sessions, which may or may not be normal. Always contact me if you have any concerns. More sensitive skin may experience some redness after the first couple of sessions. This normally goes away after 2 to 3 hours. Dermaplaning may cause minor superficial abrasions which may not appear until a day or two following your treatment. If this should occur, please contact me so that I can do a post-treatment follow up with you. After your treatment, SPF 30+ MUST be worn at all times. Tanning beds should never be used. You are making an investment in your skin: therefore, it is to your benefit to continue to protect it long after your series of treatments is completed.
  • Is satisfaction guaranteed?
The majority of my clients receive noticeable, satisfactory to above average results with a series of treatments and a commitment to a daily skin care regimen. However, this outcome cannot be guaranteed as maximum results and are highly dependent on age, cumulative sun exposure, health, lifestyle, genetic traits, general skin condition and willingness to follow recommended protocols. Be aware that many changes may occur deeper with the skin over time. To continue the maintenance of your skin after you complete your treatment(s), I may inform you of long-term age management programs.
  • Contraindications
Although it is impossible to list every potential risk and complication, the following conditions are recognized as contraindications for dermaplaning treatment and must be disclosed prior to treatment. • Active acne • Active infection of any type, such as herpes simplex or flat warts. • Any raised lesions • Any recent chemical peel procedure • Chemotherapy or radiation • Eczema or dermatitis • Family history of hypertrophic scarring or keloid formation • Hemophilia • Hormonal therapy that produces thick pigmentation • Moles • Oral blood thinner medications • Pregnancy • Recent use of topical agents such as glycolic acids, alpha-hydroxy acids and Retin-A • Rosacea • Scleroderma • Skin Cancer • Sunburn • Tattoos • Telangiectasia/erythema may be worsened or brought out by exfoliation • Thick, dark facial hair • Uncontrolled diabetes • Use of Accutane within the last year • Vascular lesions
  • Post-Treatment and Home Care
Aerobic exercise or vigorous physical activity should be avoided until all redness has subsided. Direct sunlight exposure is to be completely avoided immediately following the treatment (including any strong UV light exposure or tanning beds). Although SPF 30+ should already be a part of your daily skin care, after dermaplaning, SPF 30+ must be applied daily to the treated area for a minimum or two weeks. Twice daily cleanse the treated area with a post-treatment cleanser, followed by a serum or treatment cream and follow with SPF 30+ sunscreen.

  • How can I prepare for my wax?
Exfoliate the area to be waxed every other day up to 48 hours prior to the service. Keeping the skin exfoliated and moisturized improves your waxing results. Be clean and free of heavy lotions on the day of your wax.
  • Is there any medications – topical or oral – that are contraindications to waxing?
Yes, exfoliating or hydroxyl-based medications including but not limited to: Retin-A, Renova, Differin, ProActive, Tazorac, Glycolic/Salicylic/Lactic Acid, Benzoyl Peroxide are contraindications to waxing. Blood thinners, steroids, skin lighters and oral acne medications such as Accutane are also medications that should prevent you form waxing. All clients must be off of Accutane for a minimum of 1 year prior to any waxing services. Make sure to discuss any oral medications you are taking as well. Antibiotics, steroids, thyroid medication, chemotherapy treatments, etc. can all affect your waxing experience. If you wax while on these medications, it may result in skin irritation, peeling or hyperpigmentation. Always check with your doctor first. Many skin care ingredients increase the rate of cell turnover therefore creating a higher risk of lifting the skin, redness, and potential reaction.
  • How long should my hair be?
It is hard to say how many days are appropriate after your last shave because everyone's hair grows at different rates. Hair must be a 1/4-1/2 inch long (think grain of rice at a minimum) for the wax to grab. On average, 14 days of growth is enough, however, longer is better.
  • Can I still get waxed when I have my period?
Absolutely! Please make sure to have a new/clean tampon inserted during your service. Please understand some people experience a higher level of discomfort due to hormones (especially a few days before beginning your period) during services. If you are concerned about the discomfort, please feel free to reschedule 24 hours in advance.
  • Can I wax when I’m pregnant?
Absolutely! If you already wax and have recently found out you are pregnant, there is no reason to change. If you have never waxed before and are considering waxing during your pregnancy, please discus the risks with your doctor. In general, there is no contraindication to getting waxed while pregnant. My only recommendation is not to wait! Waiting until you are 8 months along will be uncomfortable and difficult. Start waxing now so you can enjoy all the great benefits throughout your pregnancy!
  • Does waxing hurt?
The first time you wax will always be the most uncomfortable because you have the most hair! However, everyone has a different level of pain tolerance and with consistency the discomfort improves. I do everything possible for the experience to be as quick and painless as possible. Top quality wax and experience make your waxing experience at Lash & Wax the best that it can be!
  • How long will the results of waxing last?
Most individuals experience at least 1-2 weeks without hair before experiencing re-growth. With regular waxing, the length of time required between treatments may increase to 4-6 weeks or longer. These results can be expected after a minimum of three consecutive (monthly) waxes. There are three different hair growth cycles and the best, longest lasting results occur after all three have been waxed.
  • Will my hair grow back differently?
The only change you should see is positive (finer, thinner, softer and more sparse) hair growth. Waxing will not make your hair (on the face or body) grow back thicker or darker! That's a myth!!
  • What are the benefits of waxing versus shaving?
Waxing is more effective than shaving because it removes the entire hair from the root, not just from the surface of the skin, giving you longer lashing results. With consistent waxing over time, hair grows back finer and sparser whereas with shaving, hair appears to grow back faster, thicker and coarser. In addition, shaving increases the risk of nicks, cuts, ingrown hairs and razor burn especially in sensitive areas such as bikini, chest and underarms.
  • What can I do for maintenance between waxing services?
Exfoliate. To improve waxing results and reduce your chances of getting ingrown hairs, it is recommended that a few days prior to, and after your waxing appointment, you gently exfoliate the skin with FUR. You can exfoliate as much as 3 times a week. Removing dead skin cells keeps your skin healthy and soft in-between waxing. Moisturize. To keep skin hydrated and smooth while helping new hairs to reach the surface of the skin without becoming ingrown, moisturize daily with FUR.
  • What age can I start waxing?
You can start waxing when you reach puberty; however, it is important to note that like pregnancy, puberty is a time where the body experiences lots of hormonal changes that can impact the quantity, color, texture and growth rate of your hair. So if you’re going through puberty and need waxing done, be mindful that your hair growth cycles are moving faster than those individuals who are in different stage of life. AS a pubescent, you will likely need to be diligent in waxing every 2-4 weeks. A parent’s written consent is required.
  • Can I wax before or after I go tanning?
Beauty professionals do not recommend tanning prior to or after waxing as tanning, in any respect, is damaging to the skin. When waxing, wax professionals aim to protect the skin and minimize the presence of redness and inflammation; therefore, it’s best to not tan before your appointment and to arrive at your appointment with uncompromised skin. However, after your waxing treatment, if your think about tanning or vacation somewhere warm, you must wait at least 24 hours before exposing the waxed area to UV rays. No matter how gentle the waxing process, the skin will be slightly exfoliated, more sensitive and be at greater risk for hyperpigmentation. Whether intentionally exposing yourself to UV rays or not, is essential that you wear sunscreen after waxing.
  • What aftercare advice should I follow after Brazilian waxing?
As with all waxing, Brazilian waxing post-care includes exfoliation and moisturizing. Using FUR as your exfoliant and FUR as your moisturizer. For 24 hours after waxing, it is important to avoid increasing circulation through any form. This includes exercise, tanning, spicy food and sexual activity. Increasing blood flow and body temperature after waxing can aggravate waxed areas and prolong the presence of inflammation, redness and the potential for infection of the hair follicle.
  • How can I maintain my bikini line in-between waxing?
In between appointments, to maintain your bikini line, use FUR as your defoliant and Fur as your moisturizer. Shaving or tweezing in between appointments interferes with the effectiveness of your waxing treatment and will prolong maximum result. Therefore, it’s best to leave the area alone with the exception of exfoliating and moisturizing. Over time, your hair will decrease in density and coarseness and you will be less concerned with presence of hair in-between waxing appointments because it will become less noticeable.
  • Why do I have to fill out a questionnaire before waxing?
As with any spa or salon service, you must fill out a questionnaire that discloses all products, medications, know skin disorders and allergies prior to waxing so your esthetician can safely perform your service. It is important that you answer questions about your current and past state of health honestly in order to perform your treatment in the safest way possible.
